A Conversation with Overlee Head Coach Andrew Koons

The Overlee Booster Club recently caught up with Overlee Head Coach, Andrew Koons, to get to know him better, and gain his insights on the team and the season ahead.

As we can imagine all too well, running the Overlee Swim Team is no small task. However, thanks to the hiring committee, we have found an aspirational and excited young coach ready to take the reigns.

Andrew Koons is a local–he grew up swimming in the NVSL at Hayfield Farms, which hosted All-Star Relays in 2010 and 2011 (OVL brought the big trophy home in ’11). Additionally, Koons attended Thomas Jefferson High School (Class of 2011), which competes in the Virginia High School–Northern Region, where he squared off against numerous Overlee Alumni attending public schools in the area, and was even teammates on the swim team with recent OVL alumnas Katie and Sophie Bennett.

From our on and off screen conversations with Andrew we have learned that he has a passion for working with our younger members of society. When he isn’t on the pool deck with the Flying Fish in the summer and Nation’s Capitol Swim Club in the winter, he is in the classroom teaching Biology and Environmental Science at Riverside High School in Leesburg, VA. Without a doubt, coaching and teaching are two endeavors that go hand-in-hand, and his enthusiasm for youth development could not be more evident.

Andrew has had a lifetime imagining what being at Overlee and in Division 1 would be like, and is thrilled to be leading the Orange and White through what looks to be another tough but promising season ahead. Do not let the determined, go-getter attitude and dark sunglasses deter you from getting to know Andrew–he is incredibly approachable, and a great person to know.

From OVL Boosters far and wide, we are wishing him and the team the best of luck this season, as they pursue banner number 30!
